Columbia Gorge CASA is excited to welcome its newest CASA volunteers: Carl, Cheri, Deborah, and Rachael, along with new advocate supervisor Vandie Benson. The ceremony was officiated by Judge Olson, with AJ scheduled to be sworn in at a later date.
These volunteers bring fresh energy and dedication to the work of advocating for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. After completing specialized training with CG CASA staff, CASA volunteers step into a unique role — one that often offers consistency, support, and a steady voice during some of the most challenging times in a child’s life.
New volunteer Rachael Fuller shared her motivation for joining the program:“I am excited to start working with kids and being of service to kids in the foster care system. I am looking forward to continuing to learn more about the child welfare system and the ways in which we can support kids in the community.”
Their arrival comes at a meaningful moment for the organization. More than 20 local children are currently on a waitlist for a CASA volunteer — a reminder of how vital this work is. While the need for advocacy remains strong, funding for nonprofits is increasingly uncertain. In response, Columbia Gorge CASA is developing a strategic plan to help ensure that every child in foster care in Hood River, Sherman, and Wasco counties has an advocate — but community partnership will be essential to making that vision a reality.
A shortage of volunteers continues to be one of the biggest barriers to serving all appointed children. Columbia Gorge CASA’s next volunteer training begins in January, with another session planned for the spring. Community donations also play an essential role in sustaining and strengthening the program.
Together, these volunteers — and those who support them — help ensure that children in foster care are seen, heard, and supported when they need it most.
