Advocate Spotlight: Jeannie Chance

This month, we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on someone who brings warmth, wisdom, and a quiet determination to her role as a CASA: Jeannie Chance.

Jeannie and her husband, Steve, made the move to the Gorge in 1992 from Spokane, Washington, with four young children in tow. As a Speech Language Pathologist working in the Hood River Valley School District, Jeannie spent her days helping students find their voice — but one particular moment stood out to her and created a desire to become a CASA volunteer.

It was during her time in the schools that she first encountered a CASA volunteer. Jeannie watched as this advocate devoted themselves wholeheartedly to one of her students. The child’s behavior started shifting. Their needs were being met. Someone was showing up, consistently and fiercely, on their behalf. The impact was unmistakable. Jeannie was moved. She tucked that inspiration away, knowing that one day, when the time was right, she wanted to be that kind of presence in a child’s life.

Fast-forward to May 2023—Jeannie was officially sworn in as a CASA, joining a cohort of volunteers she fondly describes as “amazing.” Despite her professional background and experience as a parent, she found the training emotionally intense and incredibly thorough. Yet she felt well-supported throughout, and continues to appreciate the constant support from CASA staff.

Jeannie’s deep well of experience — as a parent, a professional, and a compassionate listener — continues to guide her in her advocacy work. She shares a simple truth that has proven powerful time and time again: “I found that when you’re available, provide food, and listen more than talk, kids share from their heart and show/tell what’s important to them.”

And it’s those moments of connection that Jeannie treasures most. “Building relationships is the best,” she says. “When kids have the freedom to say/ask anything without fear - they are hilarious, real, and often totally random. Yet, it is in these moments that you know they know, you’ve got them. That’s real.

One of her favorite memories so far comes from a backyard visit—with races and waddling contests—when a young child in her case noticed a bone on my wrist that seemed odd to him. He became fascinated with this protrusion and to the dismay of his foster mom, continued to ask questions, make comments and compared it with those of everyone else.. Fast-forward three months, and he still asks, “Can I check out your bone?” as he slides Jeannie’s sleeve up, then adds, “Mine is almost like yours now.” If others try to get in on this interaction, he lets them know that only his wrist bone is like hers. “It almost doesn’t matter what it is—kids just want to have their own unique connection!”

When advocating in court, Jeannie has felt respected as a party to the case. She was impressed by the judge’s recognition of her role and appreciated how consistently the judge acknowledged her reports—highlighting both her presence and the quality of her work.

For anyone considering becoming a CASA, Jeannie offers this heartfelt encouragement:

“If your heart is leading you to advocacy, go through the training and find out if it is for you. The more you know, the better you’ll know for yourself.  If you need more information before taking that step, talk to the CASA staff or current advocate. We are all willing to be honest while also encouraging you to take the leap. If you decide to move forward, be prepared for challenges that are far-outweighed by the joy you will receive in return. You will make an impact on lives that will continue to unfold for years to come.”

Thank you, Jeannie, for the heart and humor you bring to this work. Our community is stronger because of you.
